A £100,000 scheme to demolish 50 houses and nine garages on an estate in St Helen Auckland has been approved.
Most of the houses, in Tintern Road, on the Leazes Lane Estate, are boarded up. They will be demolished to make way for a regeneration scheme.
Wear Valley District Council supported the proposal at a planning meeting on Tuesday.
The work is part of a plan to regenerate the area under the South Bishop Auckland Single Regeneration Budget initiative. Demolition is expected to be completed by the end of June.
About 15 families and one owner occupier will be relocated in St Helen Auckland.
The regeneration plan includes remodelling the estates. Other action points include training and employment initiatives, increased community facilities, attracting private housing developers and encouraging new employers to the area.
