POLICE investigating a car crash which claimed two lives expect to release details of the victims this morning.
Officers from North Yorkshire Police had hoped to release the identification of the victims - a 52-year-old woman and her six-year-old granddaughter - yesterday, but said there were problems in tracing relatives.
The woman's other two grandchildren, a two-year-old boy and one-year-old girl, are being treated in Scarborough General Hospital, where their condition yesterday was described as "stable and not life threatening".
The accident happened shortly after 3.30pm on Wednesday, on the A169 at Briggswath, near the junction with the A171 and Sleights Bridge, on the outskirts of Whitby.
The woman was driving a white Nissan Micra and was travelling towards Sleights when it was involved in a head-on collision with a red Vauxhall Corsa.
The 61-year-old female driver of the other car is detained in Scarborough General Hospital with a broken leg, and is described as stable.
Anyone with information about the crash, or the movements of the two vehicles, is asked to contact PC Ian Jefferson on (01723) 500300.
