A NEW factory bringing 50 jobs for disabled workers was welcomed by the union which fought for their future.

Remploy, which has hundred of North-East employees among its 6,000 staff nationwide, announced yesterday that it is to build new premises at Gateshead.

Earlier this the GMB listed the company's Gateshead packaging plant as one of a number of the company's 87 outlets which, it claimed, the Government had earmarked for closure or merger.

The union held candle-lit vigils outside the House of Commons and warned of strike action if the cuts went ahead.

Last night the GMB said that workers with disabilities could now look forward to better employment opportunities.

John Johnson, the GMB Northern Region's Organiser in Remploy, said: "This is great news at the end of a challenging year for Remploy's employees. We had to fight very hard earlier this year to prevent some closures and cause terrible disruption for workers with disabilities.

"I am especially delighted that there is now expansion of the Gateshead facilities. The workers in Remply are incredibly loyal and committed and the role that all parties, including Gateshead Council, have played in providing opportunities for people with disabilities is highly commendable."
