A SCHEME to regenerate the Dene Estate, in Willington, is continuing with approval given for 15 bungalows.
The homes, in Appleton Crescent, are being built by the Three Rivers Housing Association and will replace homes that were recently demolished.
The bungalows will form a cul-de-sac and provide two-bedroom housing for elderly and disabled people.
Wear Valley District Council approved the scheme at a planning meeting on Tuesday.
Willington Councillor Brian Myers said: "The area is badly in need of two-bedroom bungalows. This scheme will provide high-quality housing for the elderly and disabled.
"The bungalows will be built on what is presently derelict land, and it's going to contribute greatly towards the regeneration of the Dene Estate."
More than two thirds of the houses on the 1920s-built Dene Estate have been demolished already, with about 40 still to be bulldozed.
