SUNDERLAND 1 Manchester City 0
Slick Sunderland got back to winning ways after two defeats in a cracking game at the Stadium of Light.
Scottish international Don Hutchison, back after injury and deputising for England striker Kevin Phillips, put the Wearsiders ahead in the 19th minute with a rocket-like freekick and only aa brilliant one-handed save by City goalkeeper prevented Niall Quinn adding to the score.
But City rallied after the break and did their utmost to force and equaliser. with goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen making a superb reflex save from Paul Dickov and Sean Wright-Phillips heading agains an upright.
But Sunderland, playing some excellent football at times, weathered the strom and it was a highly entertaining game for the 47,475 crowd.
