POLICE brought Christmas cheer to elderly victims of crime in the form of festive hampers.

Officers from Hartlepool made the deliveries, containing everything from Christmas cakes and puddings, to sherry and tins of ham, after accruing points for the groceries.

They took advantage of a scheme run by Asda to notch up credits when they called in for petrol for patrol cars.

Sergeant Lynn Beeston said: "We got nearly £400 worth of vouchers and thought it would be a nice gesture to make sure elderly victims of burglary and robbery should benefit.

"Asda also donated money towards the scheme and, altogether, we have made up 27 hampers, which were handed out yesterday."
