POLICE have renewed a stay safe message to people walking home over the festive season after a balaclava-clad attacker grabbed a young woman.
The incident happened at about 12.30am on Sunday at the southern end of the High Street, in Northallerton, North Yorkshire.
The woman was walking along Thirsk Road when the man, who wore a denim jacket, appeared.
He said nothing, made no threats, and apart from pulling the woman's jacket open he used no violence. He ran off, possibly with a limp, after she hit out.
Last night police said his motive was not clear, but urged witnesses contact them on (01609) 783131, extension 4457.
"We would also like to take the opportunity to remind anyone walking home at night to take sensible precautions," said a spokesman.
"Walk with a friend, use only well-lit paths and do not speak with strangers.
"Report anything suspicious to ourselves."
