GARDENER Charlie Topping is looking forward to a happy festive season after finding a job for the first time in ten years.
Mr Topping, 57, had almost given up hope of ever finding work, but his success on the New Deal programme proves it is never too late to learn.
Mr Topping, from Ferryhill, joined the scheme after visiting Chilton Training Centre and was given a 16-week placement at Ferryhill Town Council.
Although he had never tried gardening before, Mr Topping picked it up straight away.
Jamie Corrigan, executive officer of Ferryhill Town Council, said: "He excelled during the time he was here. He was a superb worker, so at the end of his New Deal period we offered him a six-month contract with a full gardener's salary. It has definitely been a success. We never knew what sort of quality workers we would get, but we were fortunate to get Charlie."
Mr Topping said: "I started on one of these training schemes which I disagreed with in the first place, but I went on one and they sent me to Ferryhill Town Council.
"After I finished the scheme I asked if there was any chance of a job and they said they would keep me on.
"I'm over the moon, because after ten years I didn't ever think I'd get another job. I'm really enjoying it, and it gives you a bit more respect for yourself.
