A CHEF got an A-plus for her new restaurant from her former cookery teacher - 17 years after telling her she would be a chef when she grew up.

When Marisa Lenaghan walked into Susan Collins' restaurant in Chester-le-Street, she knew her former pupil must have been paying attention in class - even down to two recipes that used to be part of her coursework.

As a student at Durham Johnston School back in 1983, Susan was asked that perennial teacher's favourite, 'What do you want to do when you grow up?' by Mrs Lenaghan. Susan replied quick as a flash - 'Be a chef'.

Mrs Lenaghan said: "We went to have a lunchtime meal and when I recognised Susan I was thrilled to see how she had not only become a successful cook, but also a successful businesswoman.

"However, as I glanced at the menu I instantly recognised two dessert dishes - beignets and sachertorte - which were both part of Susan's cookery coursework. It was great to see she had brought her school knowledge to the business."

Susan, who is the owner of Front Street's Collins restaurant, is delighted at achieving her ambition of owning her own restaurant. She said: "It was a great surprise to see Mrs Lenaghan sat down in my restaurant, but there was a greater surprise when she filled in her comments in the visitor book.

"She obviously hadn't forgotten about my childhood dream. She had written: 'We're looking forward to coming back for dinner. Your ambitions have been realised - you're on the way to success.'"

Susan continued: "I am very proud of my restaurant and it gives me a great sense of achievement.

"I would advise anyone who has an ambition in life to work very hard at it, as their dream could one day be fulfilled.
