SHOPPERS caught short while visiting Northallerton may have to suffer a little longer.
The town centre toilets were deemed beyond repair and closed two years ago.
Others are still available at the Applegarth car park, but it seems not everyone can make it that far as, since 1998, traders have been reporting an increase in the number of people asking to use their smallest room.
Shopkeepers are among those pressing the authorities for a solution - and, in late summer, it seemed one might not be too far off.
Detailed drawings of a new toilet block near the Town Hall went on public display, and comment was invited on the design, which included a canopy that could double as a bus shelter.
However, on Thursday, Hambleton's planning committee will be recommended to oppose the scheme, because of its impact on Northallerton's conservation area.
There are concerns the building would block views of the Town Hall, and other listed buildings.
It is suggested the district council goes back to the drawing board and reconsiders the design.
