A COUNTY Durham chef got top marks for her new restaurant from her former cookery teacher - 17 years after telling her that she would be a chef when she grew up.
When Marisa Lenaghan walked into Susan Collins' restaurant in Chester-le-Street, she knew her former pupil must have been paying attention in class - even down to two recipes that used to be part of her coursework.
As a student at Durham Johnston School in 1983, Susan was asked that perennial teachers' favourite: "What do you want to do when you grow up?" by Mrs Lenaghan.
"Be a chef," replied Susan, quick as a flash.
Mrs Lenaghan said: "We went to have a lunchtime meal and, when I recognised Susan, I was thrilled to see how she had not only become a successful cook, but also a successful businesswoman.
"However, as I glanced at the menu, I instantly recognised two dessert dishes - beignets and sachertorte - were both part of Susan's cookery coursework. It was great to see she had brought her school knowledge to the business."
Susan, owner of Collins restaurant in Front Street, said: "She obviously hadn't forgotten about my childhood dream."
