A CONTAINER-load of presents is on the way to needy families in Kenya, thanks to the efforts of a Washington couple.
Retired social workers Allan Richardson, 59, and his wife Avril, 57, want to thank everyone who helped them fill the 40ft container that is now on its way to Mombasa, the East African country's main port.
People have responded to their appeal for help with the task of filling the container, which is due to arrive on January 22.
Mr Richardson said: "The response has been fantastic. The container was brimful. We had to lock the door to stop the stuff falling out. It included children's clothing and footwear, bedding, 34 bikes and a dozen footballs.
"There was office equipment for when we set the office and clinic up, and medical equipment."
The Ouston Christian Fellowship paid the £1,000 cost of the container, so it could be used as an office and clinic when the couple, both Christians, arrive in Mombasa, in the new year.
The Richardsons, who attend Bethany Christian Church, Houghton-le-Spring, also raised £2,500.
