PLANS for a Ferryhill gala to take place in the town this summer will be discussed at a meeting this evening.

The Ferryhill 2000 committee, chaired by the Reverend Keith Lumsdon, of St Luke's Parish Church, is looking for ideas or offers of help for the gala, to be held on the weekend of July 14 and 15.

The Saturday will consist of show rides in the Market Place, but the following day will be the main event.

Organisers hope to stage a number of attractions, including Punch and Judy, a dog display team, a bird of prey display, a performance from the town's award-winning brass band and local pop bands.

There will be street entertainers and competitions, including five-a-side and fancy dress and maybe a tug-of-war competition between pubs.

Jamie Corrigan, executive officer of Ferryhill Town Council, said: "Anyone at all can take part in the meetings, whether you are a member of the public, representative of an organisation, or a councillor. People who want to come along and have some input would be more than welcome."

The committee is also hoping to stage activities for children during the summer.

Tonight's meeting is at Ferryhill Town Hall, at 6.15pm. Anyone who wants to help or take part in the gala can ring the town hall on (01740) 652157.
