A CHRISTMAS giving scheme will have long-term benefits for children admitted to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead.
Staff at Gateshead's Marriott Hotel leisure club introduced a fitness drive over two months to encourage non-members to get fit - in exchange for contributing a present for a child in the hospital.
This year, the scheme was more successful than ever, with more than twice as many presents received as last year.
Although many of the patients in the children's ward, and those who attend the Bluebird suite were given gifts to make Christmas more enjoyable, some were stored, and will be given to children throughout the year.
Sister Janet Green said: "Giving patients these presents meant we were able to create more festive cheer and make the time pass a little quicker."
