A CAMPAIGN group is urging people to back a fighting fund for North-East market trader Steven Thoburn.
Mr Thoburn, known as the "metric martyr", goes before Sunderland magistrates later this month accused of continuing to trade using traditional pounds and ounces instead of metric measures at his market stall in the Southwick area of the city.
Trading standards officials are bringing the prosecution under weights and measures regulations, which came into force last January.
Supporters are raising funds to help meet 36-year-old Mr Thoburn's legal bill prior to the scheduled three-day trial, starting on January 15.
A fundraising dinner and auction is being staged at Sunderland's Stadium of Light on January 13, organised by the British Weights and Measures Association (BWMA), and Mr Thoburn's fellow trader, Neil Herron.
BWMA committee member Derek Norman is asking for donations to be made through the BWMA, 45 Montgomery Street, Edinburgh, EH7 5JX. For further information call 0131-556 6080.
