VILLAGERS are being urged to have their say on plans to replace a dangerous road junction with a roundabout.

The Highways Agency plans to install the roundabout at the junction of the A167 with the B6312, near Plawsworth, scene of several accidents.

It is sending leaflets to people in Plawsworth, Kimblesworth and Nettlesworth asking for their views about the scheme.

The response will be taken into account when the scheme is designed. Work is due to start in October.

Crossing points for pedestrians will be installed near the roundabout. Officials hope the scheme will also improve access to nearby bus stops.

Highways Agency project manager, Alan Ellison, said: "The comments we receive will help to ensure that the roundabout's design reflects the views of the public.

"I urge everyone who has received one of our leaflets to respond to the questionnaire.

"Our records show that in the five years between 1995 and 1999 there were 16 injury accidents at the junction.

"Over the same period, there have also been three accidents involving pedestrians crossing the dual carriageway. Sadly, one of these was a fatal accident.''

The Highways Agency hopes to hold a public exhibition outlining its proposals in the spring or early summer.

Responses to the questionnaire should be returned by January 31.
