CRACKS have been found in a number of road flyovers in the region.

A 50mph speed restriction has been in force at the A66 Yarm Road Interchange, near Stockton, Teesside, for months, following the discovery of cracks in the base of supports of the parapet fence.

Similar cracks have now been found in the parapet of the flyover taking the A1027 Inner Stockton Ring Road over the A19 at Norton, Teesside, above Billingham Bottoms.

Routine inspections uncovered cracking to a lesser degree in the flyover carrying the A689 over the A19, and Sandy Lane bridge between Wynyard and Wolviston, near Billingham.

Temporary concrete barriers are in place on both Yarm Road Interchange and at Norton.

A spokesman for the Government's Highways Agency said the problems found with Baco Aluminium parapets were not unique to Teesside.

Speaking about problems at the Norton parapet, he said: "We are reviewing whether to repair or replace the parapet. It may well mean replacing the parapet with a different construction. The decision will be made as soon as possible, being mindful of safety implications.

"We have similar problems at various locations. The main cause is age. Some of the parapets are getting on for 25 years old and there is the weather; a combination of the two.''

The official said it was impossible to say how much the work would cost, as it depended on how much work was required on each bridge.
