MORE shops are likely to join supermarket chain Tesco in the new Newton Aycliffe town centre.
Tesco is to build a 68,000 ft sq store as the centrepiece of a £25m scheme on the site of the former Avenue Comprehensive School.
John Litherland, director of planning at Sedgefield Borough Council, said the announcement had prompted interest from other retailers, including a household goods store, a heath and fitness suite, leisure and fashion stores.
"It looks like the developers have got a reasonably diversified group of companies interested. Having Tesco confirmed means we can start to firm up other companies very soon," he said.
Mr Litherland said the key to success of the development would be making sure that it ties in with the existing town centre.
Part of the town centre, which includes the health centre and library, is to be demolished and it is this area the developers must get right, he said.
Councillor Bob Fleming said: "I'm extremely pleased with the news that's coming forward on the major shopping development and the other stores coming on board rather quickly."
