POLICE in Newton Aycliffe have warned people to beware of bogus officials after a man forced his way into a pensioner's home.
The man visited a bungalow in Travellers Green at 2.30pm on Saturday, offering to give a quote for guttering repairs.
He was told by the 72-year-old woman that the property belonged to the council and that it would carry out any work.
When she tried to shut the door, he put his foot in the way and pushed his way through to the bedroom where the pensioner's home carer was working. He asked the carer if the house was privately owned and left once he was told it was not.
The caller was carrying a blue clipboard and offered no identification.
He is described as white and in his 40s, about 6ft, of broad build and clean shaven with a fresh complexion. He had dark, wavy hair, brushed back, and was wearing an anorak, white shirt, navy trousers, black shoes and navy gloves.
Detective Constable Colin Howey said: "We would appeal to anyone who thinks they may have seen this man to get in touch with the police."
Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on (01325) 314401.
