FIRMS in north Hartlepool are being urged to start the new year by tapping into a special fund to beat crooks.
Cash is available to help businesses boost security at their premises by installing extra lighting or fitting alarms, fencing and shutters.
The money is provided by the North Hartlepool Partnership which includes Hartlepool Council. It is using Single Regeneration Budget funds to spearhead the regeneration of the north Hartlepool and Headland area.
The scheme, called the Security Fund for Business, is open to firms in the North Hartlepool Partnership area and applications are assessed by a crime prevention officer.
Anthony Steinberg, the council's senior economic development officer, said: "We have had a good take up for the scheme but there are still clearly many firms in the area which could benefit from it."
Retailers or wholesalers employing less than ten people and any size of manufacturing company can apply.
A grant of 75 per cent of the cost, up to a maximum of £1,000, may be available for retailers. For manufacturers a grant of 50 per cent is available, up to a maximum of £2,500.
