A MAN appeared in court yesterday on charges relating to the alleged sale of eggs of endangered birds.
In what is believed to be the first case brought under the Control of Trade in Endangered Species (Enforcement) Regulations of 1985, involving the sale of birds' eggs, Michael Terrence Davidson faces three charges encompassing the sale of a total of 155 eggs.
Each of the alleged offences is also contrary to Article 6 of European Council regulations.
The eggs, which have not been recovered, belong to species of birds of prey, including peregrine, golden eagle, osprey, buzzard, black kite, sparrowhawk, kestrel, and several varieties of harrier and owl.
Proceedings against 57-year-old Mr Davidson were adjourned for a further preliminary hearing at Durham Crown Court.
Mr Davidson, of Lanton Terrace, New Herrington, near Sunderland, was bailed to return for the next hearing, on January 22, which will determine if trial is required later in the year.
