CONSUMER watchdogs are warning people to beware of Bodge the Builder, who is bringing misery to people's lives.
Hartlepool trading standards officers are reminding householders that not all builders are as reliable as cartoon hero Bob the Builder, and are warning of cowboys who prey on the vulnerable and elderly.
Trading standards manager Michael Welsh is hoping the comparison with Bob the Builder will make people aware of the bodgers in the trade.
He said: "Bob the Builder gives the wrong impression of all builders, when there is a small number of cowboy builders who can be called Bodge the Builder.
"They usually prey on the vulnerable and the elderly who are frightened by the rogue builders who say their roof is in need of urgent repair.
"But they do not live up to Bob's catchphrase 'can we fix it? yes we can.' They often leave a bodged-up job."
Mr Welsh said: "If a builder tells you your roof needs work, simply thank them and say you will consult your insurance company for advice.
"Do not be pressurised into letting them on to your roof and do not agree to any work being carried out there and then,
"Contact your insurance company for advice and get estimates from reputable builders.
"You may find that your roof was not as dangerous as you were led to believe."
