PATIENTS will benefit from the creation of two new primary care trusts, according to North-East health officials.
Yesterday, the Department of Health announced that the North Tees primary care group, in Thornaby, and the Hartlepool primary care group would become primary care trusts (PCT) from April 1.
The new trusts' boards will include members of the public as well as health professionals.
Graeme Oram, the current chief executive of Hartlepool primary care group, said: "I am delighted that PCT status has been given to Hartlepool primary care group.
"PCT status will enable us to progress the implementation of the NHS plan bringing investment in health premises, the range of services available and the numbers of staff working within the town.
"We are committed to high quality and accessible primary care, community and hospital services and continuing the spirit of partnership working and community involvement."
The change in status follows a three-month consultation period with people in the area.
Plans for the future of the PCT include new health strategies for young people and community resource centres for diagnosis and treatments.
