POLICE are hoping to forge closer links with the community under a scheme to identify core problems affecting local people.
Five officers have been appointed to become beat managers in Sunderland, with a brief to target crime and disorder.
Working from Sunderland's Gill Bridge Avenue station, the officers will have responsibility for different areas and the power to allocate resources to deal with local concerns.
They can also call on help from local community groups and Sunderland City Council.
The beat managers are Leesa Dowell, Monkwearmouth, Roker, Fulwell; Stew Hall, West Grangetown, Thornhill, Ashbrooke, Mowbray Park; Mick Wright, Millfield; Andy Raybould, Witherwack, Hylton Red House, Downhill; and Craig Willingham (Castletown, Hylton Castle, Town End Farm).
