A NORTH-EAST MP is campaigning to get more protection for young people who own mobile phones.
MP for Stockton South Dari Taylor launched her campaign as Home Secretary Jack Straw confirmed that theft of mobile phones was a crimewave.
Ms Taylor wants to ensure that insurance companies help young people who are often disqualified from taking out a policy on their phones or cannot afford the premiums.
She said: "The problem arises from the small print of insurance policies which requires people to be over 18 to make a valid claim.
"Many of the 4.5m mobile phone buyers this Christmas were under 18, purchasing the latest youth accessory.
"Anyone can walk in and buy a 'pay-as-you-go' phone where no contract is needed.
"Insurance is sold as an optional extra. Young people who lose their phones or have them stolen are shocked to find they cannot make a valid insurance claim.
Ms Taylor is asking the Association of British Insurers to either ensure that their members voluntary honour claims from young people or refund the premiums to those who cannot use a policy because of their age.
