COMPREHENSIVE school pupils swapped pens and pencils for spades, saws and hammers to construct a tree nursery in their school grounds.
Year 10 and 11 students at Bishop Barrington School, in Bishop Auckland, were helped in their two-day project by science teacher Marc Stuart and Gill Flint, from environment agency Groundwork West Durham.
The children planted small trees given by Groundwork, which will eventually be planted out in the community, along with other saplings they have grown from seed.
The project celebrates national tree week and was supported by a grant from Durham County Council
