HEALTH and safety officials have launched an investigation into the death of a man who was killed while carrying out urgent repairs to a primary school roof yesterday.
The man, who has not been named, was removing unsafe coping stones from a peak at the front of Newcastle's Denton Road Primary School when it collapsed and the scaffolding platform came away.
The accident happened while Newcastle City Council's technical staff, health and safety team and education managers were assessing the safety of the site at Bankside Road following a survey which identified structural problems.
A Newcastle City Council spokesman said the building would be closed under emergency procedures. Officers from the local education authority are urgently looking at relocating about 150 pupils from the school to alternative schools as soon as possible
