A TEENAGE cyclist was badly injured when he was knocked off his bike by a hit-and-run driver.
The 14-year-old, who has not been named, suffered serious injuries and is said to be stable in hospital, although his condition is giving doctors concern.
The youngster, from the Seaham area of County Durham, was injured when he was hit by a car in Sunderland, on Saturday teatime.
The accident happened at about 5.10pm, on the A1018 in Ryhope Road, near the junction with Toll Bar Road.
Police say that the driver of the metallic blue car involved, said to be similar to a Citroen Saxo, failed to stop after the accident.
The injured youngster was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital, before being transferred to Newcastle General Hospital.
Ryhope Road was closed from 6.15pm until 1am on Sunday, while police accident investigators examined the scene.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said that the car would have suffered damage to its front valance, bumper and headlight.
He asked anyone who saw the accident, or knows anything about the car involved, to get in touch.
