Newcastle are poised to finally get rid of Didier Domi after washing their hands of the mixed-up French rebel.
The Geordies plan to sell Domi to his former club Paris St Germain for £3m this week and use half the cash to buy Wayne Quinn from Sheffield United.
Boss Bobby Robson will land a double windfall if Fulham step up their interest in Domi's fellow countryman Alain Goma.
Fulham manager Jean Tigana regards Goma an ideal replacement for car crash victim Chris Coleman but his £2m valuation falls way short of Newcastle's asking price.
Robson is in no rush to sell Goma after being impressed with the centre-back's determination and commitment to the cause over a difficult few weeks - but Domi's situation is completely different.
Chairman Freddy Shepherd had been prepared to put Domi out of football following the fullback's amazing walkout last month.
Shepherd threatened to freeze the player's registration for the remaining 30 months of his contract if the AWOL ace failed to return to Tyneside.
But the St James' Park chief has softened his hardline stance after agreeing a fee with PSG and hopes to conclude the deal in the next 48 hours. The whole bizarre incident has been complicated by talk of a hate campaign by Newcastle fans and Domi's muslim beliefs.
But Newcastle regard that as a smokescreen to obscure the fact that Domi simply wanted to stay in Paris. If the transfer can't be completed Newcastle will leave Domi in the cold and sell him at the end of the season.
However they need the cash to buy on-loan Quinn, who is committed to leaving Bramall Lane following his impressive debuton Saturday.
Andy Griffin, meanwhile, has been kept in cold storage with a view to turning the heat on David Ginola in tomorrow night's FA cup third round replay at Aston Villa.
Griffin's merciless treatment on Ginola in the 1-1 draw at St James' Park resulted in the Frenchman being substituted.
And Robson confirmed that the defender had been kept out of win over Coventry so that he'd be ready for the return. "I want him fresh for Mr Ginola and also for Harry Kewell when we meet Leeds at the weekend," said Robson.
Robson is down to the bare bones because Quinn, Kieron Dyer and Nolberto Solano are all unable to play while Robert Lee's proposed comeback has been put on ice. However, Kevin Gallacher is ready to make his first start since the end of September at Villa Park
