A FORMER prison officer who claimed that work-related stress cost him his job has been given substantial damages by the Home Office.
The 46-year-old man - who has not been named - worked at Castington young offenders' institution, Northumberland, from 1983 until he was medically retired in 1997.
The officer claimed that under-staffing, workplace pressures and a lack of help caused him to have a number of mini-breakdowns. He accepted a payout - understood to be more than £100,000 - in an agreed settlement.
The officer worked on A Wing at Castington, which contained vulnerable inmates and sex offenders.
The case was settled just days before it was due to heard at an employment tribunal.
