THOUSANDS of residents are continuing to give their opinions on how their council should be run.
Leaders at Gateshead Borough Council are in the process of introducing one of three systems outlined by the Government. They can introduce a leader with a cabinet of councillors, a directly-elected mayor with a cabinet of councillors, or a directly-elected mayor with a council manager.
A series of focus groups, forums and roadshows is being held across the borough, with councillors and council employees giving out information about the changes and seeking comments and opinions.
An opinion poll and forum showed that most believed the best option is for a leader with a cabinet of councillors.
About 56 per cent chose this option, which is closest to how the council operates at the moment.
Councillors will consider a report on the consultation process next month before details of the new constitution are drawn up and submitted to the Government before the end of June
