DELIGHTED Sunderland manager Peter Reid again called for his record-breaking striker Kevin Phillips to be given his chance by new England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson after a match-winning performance at Crystal Palace.
Eriksson watched Phillips in Sunderland's 2-0 win at West Ham last Saturday, when Phillips had only one shot at goal.
But last night he laid Sunderland's Selhurst Park bogey with two brilliant goals to bring his tally to 104 and break Sunderland's post-war scoring record.
Reid said: "People keep asking about Kevin Phillips because he keeps getting goals.
"I think he will score goals at any level, and at international level I think you need a run.
"He had four or five chances tonight before he scored and it doesn't faze him.
"He is very single-minded. I am not telling Sven how to pick his team but Kevin Phillips is certainly one I would have a look at.
"Last Saturday was a different type of match. Kevin only had one shot but he worked like anything for the team and did a terrific job."
Reid felt striker Danny Dichio had been fouled before kicking the ball away for his second yellow card and automatic sending off, but had little sympathy for the substitute.
He said: "I think he deserved to go. He might have been fouled but it was no justification for kicking the ball away like he did."
Reid felt Sunderland fully deserved their victory after being second-best to Palace in the first half.
He said: "Conditions underfoot were difficult but it was a good cuptie, with end-to-end stuff.
"I'm delighted to have a home tie against Ipswich in the next round. They have done fantastically well this season. All you can ask for is a home tie."
