REJUVENATION of an empty bank building at Reeth, in Swaledale, is the subject of a public meeting next week.
Residents and business people are invited to find out more about initial proposals for the former Barclay's premises in the centre of the village.
Mr Hugh Rolo, an external consultant from the development trusts association, appointed by Richmondshire District Council to draw up a business plan for use of the building, will present his ideas.
Investigations have already begun into establishing a community partnership organisation to buy the old bank and oversee its refurbishment. It is felt such a group would be best placed to attract grant funding, including cash from Europe.
When refurbishment is complete, the district council hopes to rent space for its third community office, following the success of those in Leyburn and Hawes. It would give local people access to council services, including the chance to pay bills.
The Yorkshire Dales national park is also looking to move into the building from its current premises just down the hill. An information point and accommodation for the local ranger would be provided.
The upper floor of the former bank could be used to provide low cost housing, probably through a housing association.
Other possible developments include provision of business support services and computer access. Outside, plans are emerging for a community orchard and the garage could possibly be used for a youth centre.
Coun John Blackie, council leader, said it was important that local people were involved in decision-making.
"When complete, this building will be at the centre of community life in Swaledale and Arkengarthdale, so it is vital we get it right from the start," he said.
"We already have two good examples of effective community offices in Leyburn and Hawes, but it is important that this new one in Reeth reflects the needs and aspirations of residents.
"This public meeting is an excellent opportunity for people to ask questions, find out more about what is being planned and make their views known. I very much hope we will get a good turnout."
The meeting is at the Buck hotel on Wednesday, 7pm
