HOME Secretary Jack Straw has praised Durham Police for recording a fall in crime.
According to Home Office figures between October 1999 and September 2000, crime in the county dropped by 4.6 per cent, down 2,265 recorded crimes.
Durham was one of 26 police forces in England and Wales to achieve a fall in recorded crime.
Mr Straw said: "I congratulate efforts by all to achieve this."
Across the county, figures showed there was a 33 per cent rise in robbery, which police put down to robberies committed by teenagers stealing mobile phones, bikes and toys such as Pokemon cards from youngsters.
Liberal Democrats said this figure highlighted the need for more bobbies on the beat.
