A TOWN is to spend £30,000 on traffic safety measures, thanks to neighbouring villages securing a bypass.
The Government money has been earmarked for Saltburn to offset any problems which may be generated by the planned Skelton and Brotton bypass.
The A174 Teesside to Whitby road which runs through the town will be downgraded once the bypass scheme is finished.
Traffic management engineers from Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council drew up a series of proposals based on suggestions from residents.
They include pedestrian crossings in Marske Mill Lane and other pelican crossings throughout the town.
Saltburn councillor Barbara Harpham said: "We wanted something that was sensible and in keeping with Saltburn. We came up with a sensible plan."
Steve Pickard, of the borough council, said the scheme, which will take three years to complete, will reduce heavy traffic going through Saltburn.
"What we are looking to do is improve the overall environment in Saltburn and we are looking to address road safety issues and reduce the potential for accidents.
"The features the residents have shown are quite sensible and certainly within our budget and should enhance the safety of the area," he said.
Copies of the proposals will be displayed in Saltburn Library from Monday, January 29, and comment is invited.
