THE owner of a Stockton hotel has claimed that her rooms have become unlettable because of the noise from a neighbouring club.
Sue Bennett, of The Courtyard Hotel, Green Dragon Yard, has complained about an application by the Georgian Theatre to open until midnight on Thursdays and until 1am on Fridays and Saturdays.
In a letter to Stockton Borough Council, Ms Bennett said that the rock music played at the venue was so loud that it disturbed guests.
She said: "The volume of the music renders many of the hotels bedrooms unlettable. Two of the rooms actually vibrate when there is music playing.
"There is no control of guests leaving the theatre after it has closed, and they regularly hang around in Green Dragon Yard, screaming and shouting.
"I have heard many complaints from hotel residents about this, with one even hanging out of his bedroom window calling to them to be quiet."
Ms Bennett also said that residents of five new flats which overlook Green Dragon Yard would be affected by the noise.
She said: "We did not object when the public entertainment licence was renewed, and would not.
"We all, as neighbours, need to cooperate and work together, but there needs to be more control of the volume of the music.
"The building does not seem to be noise-insulated at all, and the music can be heard quite clearly on Silver Street.
"Twelve midnight must be the limit - please!"
Opposition to the proposed longer opening hours has also been voiced by Cleveland Police.
A spokesman said: "I must make it clear that the police have no more difficulty with these particular premises than any other premises in the Stockton High Street area.
"The police are concerned about the general impact that a further increase in licensing hours will have upon the policing of Stockton High Street.
"The High Street-Yarm Lane junction is the area where more disorder takes place in Stockton than any other.
"This is particularly true at the times when public houses and nightclubs are closing, especially in the early hours of the morning.
"The police would not wish to see a further premises open until 1am, and therefore contributing to the number of people on the street at this time."
No one at the Georgian Theatre was available for comment.
The council will decide on the future opening hours of the Georgian Theatre at a meeting tomorrow
