THE parents of a 14-year-old boy knocked off his bike by a 63-year-old motorist have said the woman's £100 fine was "appallingly inadequate".
David and Anita Stacey made the comments after Jean Stoddart was fined £100, ordered to pay £35 costs and had six penalty points added to her licence, for careless driving.
Ms Stoddart, of Sherwood Close, Barnard Castle, had previously pleaded guilty to the charge by letter and was not present at the hearing at Darlington Magistrates' Court yesterday.
The court heard that the accident happened last July, at the junction of Victoria Road and Green Lane, Barnard Castle, when Mrs Stoddart pulled out and struck Robert Stacey, knocking him off his bike.
The youngster was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital with cuts to his face and arms, and mild concussion. He has made a full recovery.
After sentencing, the 14-year-old's parents said they were not satisfied with the punishment.
Mrs Stacey, of Barnard Castle, said: "I think the punishment should have been greater. This is appallingly inadequate, because our son could have been very seriously injured. Thankfully he was wearing a helmet, which saved his life."
