PLANS to build nine homes on the site of a former convalescent home could go ahead despite protests.
Clarion Homes has applied to Darlington Borough Council for permission to build the houses at Ropner Convalescent Home and Middleton Lane, Middleton St George, near Darlington.
The plans are for nine detached houses and garages, and to convert the home into eight apartments.
The house and the former home are both vacant. The site is very close to the Parish Church of St Laurence, which is a Grade II-listed building.
Sixty letters of objection have been received by the council against the plans.
The letters say the plans will severely affect the setting of the church.
They also argue there is no need for this type of housing in the village, and say the development would result in a loss of open area, the houses would be out of character with the setting, and the existing vehicle access is too dangerous to cope with additional traffic.
There are also concerns that the buildings would overlook the garden of rest at the church.
Middleton St George Parish Council has also objected to the scheme.
However, planning officers at the council have recommended the scheme for approval.
Members of the planning committee will consider the application today
