THE Newcastle Sports Council re-launched itself yesterday to reflect its drive to develop talent in the wide range of sports that are putting the city firmly on the sporting map.
The event, at the Pitcher and Piano, on the city's Quayside, was attended by a host of rising stars, including double Paralympic medallist Steven Miller, World Championship swimming finalist Sarah Whewell and Jamie Noon, of the Newcastle Falcons.
Sport Newcastle is a voluntary support group offering financial support and advice to talented young sports people in the North-East.
Past recipients of awards from Sport Newcastle include Olympic Gold medal winner Jonathan Edwards, who got a grant for his first pair of running shoes, and Olympic runner Mike McLeod, now a member of the body's committee.
