COUNCILLORS have blocked moves by a Darlington businessman to renew permission for a pub or restaurant in Skinnergate.
Martin Craster had applied for the permission at 12 Skinnergate, now the Dani Martini clothes shop.
Planners had recommended refusal because of the potential loss of a retail outlet and the impact it would have on the street.
Darlington Borough Council's planning applications committee, which met yesterday, has now agreed not to renew the permission, granted at appeal two years ago.
Violet Watson and her husband John, who live in nearby Arcadia Court, had been among ten residents who had signed a petition objecting to the application.
She said: "I am very glad to hear this. It is great news."
