A MAN said to have got off lightly after beating up another driver in a road rage attack, had his jail term increased in a rare move by judges at London's Criminal Appeal Court yesterday.
Mark Heighton, 25, of Westbury Street, Thornaby, was convicted at Teesside Crown Court, last May 22, of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Jonathon Poppleton.
The court heard that Heighton struck Mr Poppleton over the head with a 3ft piece of wood or metal after their cars collided in Stockton town centre on October 30 last year.
Later, Heighton was also convicted of possessing heroin and amphetamines with intent to supply.
Heighton received consecutive 21-month jail terms for each of the offences. He was ordered to serve a further five months for breaching the licence period of an earlier jail term, resulting in a total sentence of three years and 11 months.
The appeal judges, accepting arguments from lawyers representing the Attorney General that Heighton's jail term was "unduly lenient", increased the overall sentence by 18 months, to five years and five months
