A NORTH-EAST independent school has been placed above Eton in a set of league tables.
Red House School, which is an independent co-educational day school, in Norton, Stockton, finished 34th out of the top independent schools across the country.
It was also 55th out of all independent, grammar and comprehensive schools.
Other well-known establishments, such as Eton and Millfield, finished well below Red House.
The GCSE tables list the top comprehensive, independent and grammar schools in terms of the proportion of pupils gaining five passes at Grade C or above.
Red House School was established in 1929.
It is one of the region's leading co-educational day schools for pupils aged between three and 16 years old.
Headteacher Chris Allen, said: "This is a tremendous achievement for the school, the teachers, the pupils and parents."
He said it firmly established the schools's position as the region's leading independent.
"One of our main aims is to help able pupils to achieve their academic potential," he said.
"The league table results show that we have gone a long way towards reaching this goal.
