A TEMPTING treat of gigantic proportions is helping an exhibition to take the biscuit.

The 'marchpane', a 15in gingerbread biscuit with Tudor icing, will feature in the latest exhibition at Redcar's Kirkleatham Old Hall Museum, depicting the everyday lives of our Tudor ancestors.

Chef Peter Brears, who specialises in medieval food, baked the biscuit in London, from where it was taken to Teesside by the Redcar Rosa Mundi re-enactment group.

The group contributed to the exhibition, The Early Tudors 1485-1547, by helping the museum amass a large collection of period objects and costumes.

But while the memorabilia will survive, the biscuit's fate has been sealed by Rosa Mundi member Mark Simmons, the museum's outreach and educational development officer - he has pledged to eat it when the exhibition ends on April 22.

Museum curator Phil Philo said: "We wanted an exhibition which would support the national curriculum.

"Very few tell the story of this period, simply because material hasn't survived. I'm told the biscuit is the sort that Henry VIII was particularly fond of."
