ELEVEN students from a Teesside sixth form have scored a best-ever record with offers of places at Oxbridge universities.

The principal of Prior Pursglove College, Guisborough, Stephen Whitehead, said that the superb success rate reflects the commitment of students and staff, and belies the myth that the state sector does not do well when it comes to gaining places at the finest British universities.

He said: "The record success reflects the high standards of work and commitment of both students and teaching staff at Prior Pursglove."

Fourteen students applied for places, and 11 have received offers.

The students attending Oxford and Cambridge will be studying a variety of subjects, including law, computing, classics, biochemistry, physics, natural sciences and veterinary medicine.

Those who have been offered places at Oxford are Garth Collins of Redcar, Amanda Dent of Coulby Newham, Sarah Graham of Nunthorpe, Russell Henry of Redcar, Sarah Long of Redcar, Tom Pringle of Guisborough, Aileen Robertson of Guisborough, and Ross Gribbin of Guisborough, who is visiting China on a gap year.

Students who have their sights set on Cambridge are Thomas Dodds of Guisborough, Mark Plane of Coulby Newham, and Alice Tighe of Redcar.
