A group of year six children experienced an educational cruise down the River Tyne, aboard the boat Island Scene.
The trip began at Newcastle Quayside opposite the old Baltic Flour Mill and headed towards the river mouth.
During the cruise, a running commentary was provided by Mr Howes, who told the children about the features of the river, the wildlife and the industry which surrounded the river.
Several species of bird were spotted by the pupils, including herons and cormorants.
The trip was particularly special as it was the last cruise down the River Tyne before it closed for the Millennium Footbridge to be erected.
It was exceptionally calm on the day of the cruise, so the children had the chance to sail past the harbour wall and out to sea where it was very choppy, which most of the children enjoyed.
On the return journey, the children had a quiz, and the members of the winning team were given the chance to steer the boat and learn about the navigational instruments on board
