POLICE are trying to piece together the last movements of a teenager whose body was found wedged between rocks.

The body of John Jeffries was discovered by two men fishing off the breakwater, near Church Street, Hartlepool, on Teesside, on Wednesday evening.

His death is being treated as suspicious. It is believed he suffered head injuries and police are anxiuous to learn how he ended up where he did.

The 18-year-old lived in Lowthian Road, Hartlepool, with his family and had spent some time studying computers at Hartlepool College of Further Education.

Tony Sutcliffe, principal of the college, said: "John was only at college for a short time. He joined last September but left in the October, stating personal reasons.

"During the time he was here, he was doing well and it was a shame when he left the course."

Police have appealed for anyone who may have seen Mr Jeffries in the marina area, during the 48 hours before his body was discovered, to come forward.

Detective Superintendent Mark Braithwaite, who is leading the inquiry, said: "John was well known among the student community and I would appeal for anyone who may have any information to come forward."

John was described as 5ft 10in and of extremely thin build.

He had short, spiky, fair to light brown hair and was wearing beige Lee Cooper denim jeans, white sports socks and black Adidas training shoes.

When found, he was wearing a brown or beige short sleeve shirt with a Newcastle United logo on the left breast and a dark bomber jacket.
