PEOPLE in Durham are being asked what they think the best structure for the leadership of the city council should be.
People will have the chance to vote on the best option in March when a leaflet is distributed to every household. The three options are an American-style directly-elected mayor, a council leader and cabinet - the current system - or a mayor and council manager.
The move is part of a Government-led drive to modernise local government.
Chief executive Colin Shearsmith said: "We want as many people as possible to take part in this debate and make their views known.
"The main aim of the modernisation process is to encourage more local people to become involved in city council proceedings, express their views and vote.
"We will give opportunities for people who live and work in Durham district to understand the options open for future council leadership and to put forward their choice."
