TWO Darlington police officers are to receive awards for foiling a man's attempt to kill himself.
PC Camelia Prendergast, 42, and Special Constable Danny McAuley, 25, were on duty last February when they received a call saying a man was trying to take his own life at a house in the town centre.
They found the 29-year-old man unconscious in a fume-filled car inside a garage, with the engine running.
Because of the size of the car, PC Prendergast had to squeeze into a 12-inch gap to reach inside the car and switch off the engine.
She and her colleague then used an oxygen mask to revive the man, who later made a complete recovery.
PC Prendergast is an experienced officer with several years service, but Special Constable McAuley was only on his second tour of duty.
They will be presented with Royal Humane Society awards in a ceremony at a date to be arranged
