MORE research is to be carried out in parts of North Yorkshire into levels of potentially-deadly radon gas, which may be hidden in private water supplies.
It is that thought five per cent of the Richmondshire district could be at risk from the gas, which is colourless and odourless but thought to be linked to pockets of cancer.
Homes in Swaledale, between Marrick and Gunnerside, and in Wensleydale, between Redmire and Bainbridge, have already been offered free tests.
Experts emphasise the risks can be limited quickly and inexpensively, either through the installation of air bricks or ventilation equipment.
However, after a resident raised the issue, Leyburn councillor Edward Forth has pointed out that homes connected to private water supplies may have slipped through the net.
Following a meeting of environment chiefs, he has been promised further research to establish the district council's position.
"I think we can be happy with their response," he said.
"I don't think there is any need for alarm but, nevertheless, the authority seems to be taking this matter seriously."
The next step is a report, which will be presented at the district authority's environment committee's next meeting. Members will be asked to vote on any action the council should take.
