Weardale businesses are launching a loyalty card to encourage people to shop close to home.

Traders have pledged to pass on special offers to customers who produce the cards, which will be available from the start of February and are free to people living between Wolsingham and Killhope.

People living outside Weardale will can pay £1 to join the scheme.

Durham Rural Community Council developed the card in partnership with Weardale Chamber of Trade.

Financial support came from Wear Valley District Council, development agency One NorthEast and the Countryside Agency.

Shops and other traders taking part will display a window sticker and can supply application forms.

The scheme will be launched by TV personality Bill Steel on February 10 at three venues.

Killhope Lead Mining Museum hosts the first leg at 2pm, with entertainment by the Weardale Tappers and children's pony rides provided by the Alston and Killhope Riding Centre.

Stanhope Silver Band will provide music for the second stage of the launch, at the Durham Dales Centre, Stanhope, at 3pm; and there will be a performance by Wolsingham Amateur Dramatic Society at Wolsingham Town Hall, at 4pm.
